The Hollywood star from Egypt, Omar Sharif who rose to fame from “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Doctor Zhivago” has passed away at the age of 83. He was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and died of heart attack on Friday afternoon in Cairo.
He remained a sought after actor for several years and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1962 for playing Sharif Ali in “Lawrence of Arabia”.
Sharif was moved to the Behman Hospital in Egypt after he became sick, he had recently spent six months in the red sea resort city of Hurghada with his son.
Leading figures from different walks of life tweet their condolences on Sharif’s death.
