Sometime back I shared my curiosity about Reiki on my blog Facebook page. It’s one of the treatments that has always made me cross my eyes with doubt despite reading success stories. Curiosity takes you to places and sometimes to people and that exactly what happened a few weeks back when I came across Raheela Ahmed who is one of Pakistan’s renowned personality development coach and Reiki master. I decided to have a little chat with her to understand the practice better, and inquire about a few myths we generally have about Reiki!

How did Reiki find you?

I found Reiki when I faced a serious health issue. I was diagnosed with an incurable eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa. It’s a degenerative disease of the retina that unfortunately leads to blindness. Having no cure in medical science to this mysterious condition, my family and I started looking towards alternative practices for healing. My sister suggested Reiki to me and I went to Dubai for this treatment not only to get cured but inspired by Reiki.  That was a turning point in my life; and right after my first attunement into Reiki level 1, my life changed forever and for the best.

When I first learned Reiki I had just graduated and then I did my first masters in applied linguistics from Kinnaird college for women Lahore. Sideways I was doing Reiki as well. Seeing the miracles of healing through Reiki made me hold on this practice and I was further motivated to pursue it. By this time I had already read a lot about mind sciences and had done silva mind control program and hypnosis. All these practices really fascinated me as I felt very much equipped to help myself and others as well. There was a lot of freedom in these healing modalities and it was all very safe. So, I decided to take it up as a profession. And along with it my learning never stopped. Reiki is now a part of my everyday life.

What happens in a basic Reiki session?

Reiki is a form of spiritual healing using ‘universal life energy’ channeled through the practitioner to the recipient. In this treatment, the client lies down or is seated comfortably fully clothed and the healer has his hands above them. The treatment lasts for an hour or more depending on the nature of the disease. There are specific hand positions involved. It is a very soothing and relaxing experience and most people fall asleep during the treatment.

How does Reiki help with both emotional and physical healing?

Reiki basically is universal life force energy. And I understand it as divine energy. If we look at our emotions, they are all a manifestation of our thoughts hence, they are also energy. This energy gets stored in our cells and over a period of time they start creating blocks and start manifesting into our physical body as diseases. So when we do Reiki, the pure divine energy or universal energy comes into our bodies and forces the stored negative or toxic energy in our cells to leave our body. Once it gets clear and positive energy takes its place, the emotional and physical pain starts disappearing.

What are some of the common Reiki myths you come across in Pakistan?

  • Reiki is some sort of magic.
  • It’s against Islam as it roots appear to be coming from Buddhism.
  • We are supposed to do it in a white room, wearing white clothes and not talking at all.
  • If u pass under high tension wire your attunement will finish and you will need to get re-attunement. This is absolutely wrong since once you learn it, you are attuned for life.

Would you recommend Reiki as a means of coping with grief? What suggestions do you have?

I would definitely endorse Reiki sessions or even learning it as a means of coping with not only grief but also with stresses, depression, anxiety, hypertension, fear, and insomnia. Apart from this, however; meditation and physical activity of walk, breathing exercises, yoga and spiritual practices also help a lot in combating grief.

Mostly what problems do people in Pakistan come for to get Reiki done?

People mostly come for stress related problems or physical ailments, in which medical science has its limitations. Also, people who follow an organic lifestyle have now shifted to alternative therapies and Reiki is one of the best; having immediate results and no side effects!

Many Reiki practitioners say you can go back into the past and heal it. What’s your take on this issue?

It is indeed possible. The second level of Reiki is known as distance healing. It means that you can send Reiki into past, present, and future not only for healing purpose but also for other social issues, relationship or financial issues as well.

Do you feel that Reiki needs standard guidelines across the board for practitioners to obtain certification in Pakistan?

Definitely, first and foremost the Reiki master should be certified from a proper place and should have fulfilled the requirements of a Reiki master certification. And those are to be associated with a Reiki master for six months at least after completing attunement of all three levels (Level 1: present healing, level 2: absent or distance healing and level 3: spiritual healing). After this, they should treat at least three hundred people under the supervision of a Reiki master to be eligible for master level certification. Unfortunately, many people call themselves Reiki masters only by taking attunements online even when they don’t know its proper use.

Can you share one of your most amazing Reiki experience?

Well, there are many of them, but the most miraculous case is the lady I treated whose left side of the body was paralyzed due to diabetes. After forty days of a one-hour daily session of Reiki, she started walking. Even doctors were amazed by her recovery.

Is there anything that I have not asked that you find is important when talking about Reiki?

, Yes I would like to clarify the difference between Reiki and Yoga because people often confuse the two. Yoga is a form of exercise that allows your body, mind, and soul to unite through meditations, breathing exercises known as pranayams and physical postures known as asanas. We physically and mentally have to perform all these practices. whereas Reiki is a form of pure spiritual healing, in which there is no physical exercise, mind control or active mental involvement.

When the practitioner starts Reiki all they have to do is set an intention for which they want to start healing and the energy flows accordingly. This is the reason why Reiki is known as an intelligent energy as it knows where to go and how to heal.

Who can learn Reiki?

Anyone can learn Reiki irrespective of age, gender, or religion.

One last thing, what does the complete training program consist of?

Reiki training is acquired in three stages or levels. Each level encompasses its own benefits and brings about radical changes in oneself.

Levels Course Duration
Level I Present healing 4 hours
Level II Absent healing 6 hours
Level III Spiritual healing Full day
Reiki Master Become a Reiki teacher 3 days
